Oliver and I set off for a walk round the Wolds today with his two mad Irish Setters, Paddy and Millie. For once, I remembered to take my camera and have another go at shooting snow scenes. I’ve always been a little disappointed with the results on my previous cameras and not overjoyed with the results on the Fuji; but, whether the lighting was right or I had finally managed to choose the right settings, the results were better than I expected and I put four of them up on Flickr this evening, and presumably they are showing up in the sidebar. Here are two to show the sort of shots I was after.
This is a stretch of the old Louth to Lincoln railway line, the bit between Louth and Hallington.
And this is the old stile on the public footpath over the same stretch. I’ve watched this stile deteriorate for ten years. When I first did this walk, you had to climb over the stile and the field was fenced off.
We ended up walking over the hills to Raithby, an extraordinary walk through snow covered Wolds and found all the roads round Hallington unclear and covered with the best skiing snow. On the way back up the fields to Hubbard’s Hills we noticed that someone had taken full advantage of the conditions and had used a pair of cross-country skis to get to Raithby. Conditions here are certainly not as bad as some parts of the rest of the country but even so we are getting the flavour of a proper winter, the first apparently for about thirty-five years. However with the wind coming in from the East and temperatures plummeting, it could get much worse. Hopefully more photo opportunities.
